Trainerize Alternative: Motus vs. Trainerize for Online Coaches

Written by the Motus team — we build Motus, so read it knowing that. We have tried to be straight about where Trainerize is genuinely the better choice, including on price. Pricing and features checked 2026-09-22; both platforms change these without much notice, so verify anything that matters to your decision at Trainerize’s own site before you buy.

Trainerize (ABC Trainerize) is one of the largest coaching platforms: a free entry plan, paid plans that scale by client count, an AI Workout Builder on its Grow plan and above, and add-ons for nutrition, payments, video coaching and a custom branded app. Motus is a much smaller, newer platform built around one idea: you set your methodology once and every client's full program is generated from it and adapted to how they are training, with nutrition logging and client billing included rather than sold as add-ons. Choose Trainerize if you want the widest feature set, a free start, or an app under your own brand. Choose Motus if programming time is your bottleneck, and you accept being early on a small platform that costs more.

Looking for a Trainerize alternative?

Start with what is actually wrong. If you want something cheaper, stay — Trainerize starts free for one client and its paid plans start at $9/mo, while Motus is $149/mo plus 15% of what you collect through it. If you want your own branded app in the App Store, stay — Trainerize sells one and Motus does not. If you want more features, stay; Trainerize is the bigger product. Motus is worth a look if your problem is the hours you spend programming: Trainerize's AI Workout Builder helps you build workouts, while Motus generates each client's whole program from your methodology and keeps adjusting it, so you edit rather than author. That is a narrower advantage than "AI versus no AI", and we would rather say so than have you find out after switching.

Where Trainerize is better

  • It is cheaper to start and cheaper to run. Free for one client, $9/mo for two, Pro from $23/mo. On Motus, 20 clients on 1:1 at $79/mo bring in $1,580/mo; Motus takes $149/mo plus 15% of that ($237), so about $386/mo in total.
  • You can have your own app. Trainerize sells a custom branded app; Motus does not offer an App Store app under your name.
  • It already has AI workout building. Its AI Workout Builder (Grow and above) means "AI" alone is not a reason to switch.
  • Far more features and a proven track record. Video coaching, a business add-on, multi-location studio plans, and years of use by coaches and gyms at scale.
  • A real free trial. 30 days with unlimited clients and no credit card.

Where Motus is better

  • The whole program comes from your methodology. Motus writes and progresses each client’s full program from how you coach and adapts it to their logging and recovery, rather than helping you assemble workouts.
  • Nutrition and payments are included. No separate nutrition or payments add-on to buy; meal logging by photo or barcode is in the same client app.
  • Two client plans from one roster. 1:1 coaching and a lower-touch Membership (from $39.99/mo) side by side, with messaging and hand-edited programs reserved for 1:1.

Who should actually use Trainerize

Most coaches shopping for a platform: anyone who wants a free or low-cost start, a large feature catalog, video coaching, a gym or multi-location setup, or an app published under their own brand. It is the safer choice today.

Who should actually use Motus

A coach who is losing hours to programming and wants each client's week generated from their own methodology, charges at least $79/mo for 1:1 work, and is fine with the Motus app carrying their logo rather than having their own. Go in knowing Motus is small, early, and more expensive.

Pricing, as of 2026-09-22

Motus

Motus Studio is $149/month plus a 15% platform fee on client payments processed through Motus, with unlimited clients and nutrition and payments included. Minimum client prices: $79/mo for 1:1, $39.99/mo for Membership. Worked example: 20 clients on 1:1 at $79/mo bring in $1,580/mo; Motus takes $149/mo plus 15% of that ($237), so about $386/mo in total.

Trainerize

Trainerize is free for one client, $9/mo for two, and Pro plans start at $23/mo for five and scale with roster size. Nutrition ($20–45/mo), Stripe payments ($10/mo), video coaching ($10/mo) and a business add-on ($25/mo) are extra; a custom branded app is a one-time $169 setup on Pro. As of September 2026, per trainerize.com/pricing — check the Pro price at your exact roster size there.

Bottom line: Even with nutrition and payments added, Trainerize is very likely cheaper than Motus for most rosters. If price decides it, Trainerize wins.

Switching from Trainerize: what it actually takes

  1. Run both for a month. Motus has no coach trial, so move a few clients first and keep Trainerize for the rest until you trust the generated programs.
  2. Set up your studio and methodology. Setup at /coach/onboard, then set your methodology and review a sample program before you invite anyone — every client program comes from it.
  3. Invite clients one at a time. There is no CSV import and no migration tool today — you invite each client by email from the coach dashboard, they set up their own account, and their history does not come with them. Export anything you want to keep from Trainerize before you close accounts.
  4. Tell branded-app clients what changes. If your clients use your Trainerize branded app, they will move to the Motus app with your name and logo on it. Tell them before the invite arrives.
  5. Move billing last. Cancel the matching Trainerize billing only after a client has paid on your Motus coach page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Motus a good Trainerize alternative?

For a narrow set of coaches. If you want lower cost, more features, or your own branded app, Trainerize is the better product and you should stay. Motus is a real alternative if programming time is the problem: it generates each client's full program from your methodology and adapts it, with nutrition and payments included — at $149/mo plus 15% of payments processed through it, on a platform far smaller than Trainerize.

Can Motus replace Trainerize?

For programming, client logging, 1:1 messaging, nutrition logging and client billing, yes. It does not replace Trainerize's branded app, video coaching, business add-ons or multi-location studio features, and it has a much shorter track record. List the Trainerize features you use weekly before deciding.

How do I switch from Trainerize to Motus?

Client by client. There is no CSV import and no migration tool today — you invite each client by email from the coach dashboard, they set up their own account, and their history does not come with them. Set your methodology first, move a few clients, and keep Trainerize running until the rest are across.

Does Trainerize have AI?

Yes. Its pricing page lists an AI Workout Builder on the Grow plan and above. The difference with Motus is scope: Motus generates the whole program from your methodology and keeps adjusting it, rather than helping you build workouts. Try both on a real client before you believe either company, including us.

Do I get my own branded app with Motus?

Not an App Store app under your own name — Motus does not offer that. What you get is a public coach page at motusprogram.com/c/yourname with your logo and your plans, where clients sign up and pay you directly through Stripe. Inside the Motus app they see your name, your logo and your methodology on their program. If a fully white-label app listed under your brand is a hard requirement, Motus is the wrong tool; some competitors sell one as an add-on.

Considering Motus for your coaching?

Studio is $149/month plus a 15% platform fee on client payments processed through Motus. Setup is self-serve — no application, no waiting list.
